Starting your integration earlier

Are you not required to integrate yet, because you are under 18? Or because you are attending an education programme in the Netherlands (‘temporary exemption’)? If you want to, you can still start your integration.

Consequences

Starting your integration will have the following consequences:

  • You will need to complete your integration within 3 years.
  • If you do not complete your integration in time, you may be fined.

The 2021 civic integration law will apply. This means you can borrow if you are a family or other migrant only. If you are an asylum status holder, you cannot borrow. The municipality will arrange your integration.

How to start your integration

  1. To start your integration, complete the ‘Verzoek (Eerder) starten inburgeringsplicht’ form.
  2. If you are 16 or 17, apply for an exemption from compulsory education (‘Vrijstelling van de kwalificatieplicht’) with the attendance officer (‘leerplichtambtenaar’) with the municipality you live in. Add this to the form.
  3. Send the form to DUO. You will receive a notice within 8 weeks.

Graduated or quit

Did you have a temporary exemption and did you graduate or quit school? You do not have to take action. If you are required to integrate, you will receive a letter from DUO within 8 weeks.
